Attorney General Brenna Bird Reminds Iowans of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
DES MOINES—Attorney General Brenna Bird is reminding Iowans that Saturday, October 24, 2026, is the 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. If an Iowan has any unused, unneeded, or expired prescription-controlled substances, this is the day you can take those to your participating local law enforcement between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm so you can safely dispose of it.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has happened twice a year since September of 2010 and has resulted in the collection and safe disposal of over 10,517 tons of pharmaceuticals. Iowans can drop off tablets, capsules, patches, and other forms of prescription drugs to be safely disposed of by the DEA and their local law enforcement partners. Liquid products should be securely sealed in their original container. Syringes, sharps, or illicit drugs are not collected. Iowans can also dispose of vaping devices and e-cigarettes with their batteries removed.
Iowans can find their local distribution site here.
